Date Paste Recipe Preparation Tips
- If you watched the video above, you’ll see that I was lazy and didn’t soak the dates in hot water before blending them up, which made my food processor hop around like a honey farmer with a slit in his pants! If you want to avoid that, soak the dates in boiling water for about 20 minutes before blending. If you have a more powerful food processor, don’t worry about it. - Use a small paring knife to take the seeds out–big knives are hard to handle and tearing them apart with your fingers makes a sticky mess!
- Decide what you’ll use this date paste recipe for before blending–you may want it super smooth and creamy, like for salad dressings. Or, you may want it to be a little chunky, like if you plan to spread it on crackers or toast.

How to Use This Date Paste Recipe
Date paste is a great whole food plant-based substitute for sugar. Generally speaking, you can substitute date paste for sugar in recipes at a 1:1 ratio–substitute one cup of date paste for one cup of sugar, for example. Be careful if your baking fluffy muffins or cakes, as the date paste will add a bit of moisture to the recipe. If you want to master the art of making vegan desserts, check out this course ASAP.
Another way to use date paste is to spread it on toast–add some tahini and it’s even better! Of course, you can also spread it on anything else that you’d like to sweeten up, from crackers to celery sticks!
Eat oatmeal or other cereals? Throw some date paste and nuts into your morning mush and transform it into a crunchy, sweet, healthy, morning delight.
Want a thick, creamy salad dressing without all the oils and other unnatural ingredients. Use date paste not only for adding a bit of sweetness to your dressings, but also to give them a thick, creamy texture.
